Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Message Recognizing Three 442nd RCT Soldiers Awarded the French Legion of Honor

Harold Afuso, Tetsuo Tateishi, and Futao Terashima honorably served in the United States Army’s historic 442nd Regimental Combat Team during one of the darkest chapters of American history. They truly knew what it meant to “Go For Broke.” They could each tell a dozen stories of heroism under intense enemy brutality, and knew many fellow Soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice on and away from the fierce battlefields of France and Germany. Instead, they chose to focus on living life to its fullest, continuning to give back and serve long after they returned home from war.

For their actions in WWII, Tateishi, Afuso, and Terashima have received numerous accolades and decorations by the United States Army, and today we honor them with the coveted French Legion of Honor—the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits. These tokens of appreciation will serve as a constant reminder to future generations of Americans, and help quantify to all those that see them, what our greatest generation was truly fighting for.

We will forever remember how these brave men changed our country—and the world—for the better. For their dedication to the United States and their fellow Soldiers, I wish to extend a special “thank-you” on behalf of the United States Congress and the Second U.S. Congressional District of Hawaiʻi.
