Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Message honoring the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal
Mahalo nui loa to everyone gathered here today in celebration of the selfless service of our veterans, their families and loved ones, and those who support them. Today’s ceremony offers us an opportunity to reflect and honor the service of the Greatest Generation, and the brave Marines that fought with every ounce of courage, bravery, and determination as they led our nation into the Pacific. The men of Guadalcanal faced an untested enemy and unimaginable odds, but they stood tall, held the line, and set the course to peace. The heart of service that carried them through the battlefields of the Solomon Islands has established a legacy that will continue to live on through the hands of time and inspire all who follow in their footsteps.
As one who wears the Army uniform, I try to imagine legacy soldiers in America’s conflicts. Each soldier of World War II can tell a dozen stories of heroism under intense enemy brutality, and many paid the ultimate sacrifice on and away from the fierce battlefields. With every story I hear, I am more touched and amazed by the valor and exceptionalism of these humble warriors.
Three years after the Battle of Guadalcanal, General Douglas MacArthur stood aboard this very ship — seventy two years ago to this day—as final surrender documents were signed that brought about the conclusion of WWII. A dawn of peace was upon us, along with a renewed promise to never forget the very high cost of war. Today and every day, we must honor that promise, and remember the debt owed to the thousands who have laid down their lives for our country throughout our history.
Mahalo nui loa to each of you here today. And to those who have passed, God bless, and may you rest in peace.
