Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Message for the Americans Of Japanese Ancestry 2017 Memorial Service

Below is a message from Rep. Tulsi Gabbard shared at the Americans Of Japanese Ancestry 2017 Memorial Service

Aloha kākou,

Mahalo nui loa to each of the veterans present here today.  Your dedication to our country and the inspiration you bless current and future generations with is a gift we are grateful for—and one that we can never fully repay.  Though I am unable to join you in person for this important 442nd annual memorial service, I very much appreciate the opportunity to offer my own personal sentiments.

Today, we recognize the innumerable acts of heroism performed by the 442nd Regimental Combat Team that were fulfilled without any hopes for medals, praise, or even a thank you. These soldiers, and the team as a whole, have collectively earned countless awards and decorations for their bravery and achievements. These warriors acted with conviction from deep within their warrior hearts and were willing to put their lives on the line for their fellow soldiers—their brothers.  I’ve heard a hundred stories and hope to hear hundreds more of the valor and exceptionalism by such heroes.

The “Go for Broke” spirit, which was in the hearts of the 442nd soldiers, carried them through World War II and also bonded them after the war.  It is this spirit that enabled them to continue the mission at home by serving as civilian leaders once they laid down the uniform, keeping the legacy alive. Indeed, it is “a legacy to preserve” and we will forever remember how the soldiers of the 442nd changed our country—and the world—for the better.  To those who have passed: mahalo nui loa, god bless, and may you rest in peace.
