Press Release

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) today released the following statement on the Defense Department's announcement of new measures to address military sexual assault:

"The Pentagon's announcement of new initiatives to address military sexual assault are positive steps toward tackling this issue. However, these changes still do not get to the heart of why so many victims do not report their assaults. Last year, 25 percent of women and 27 percent of men who received unwanted sexual contact indicated the offender was someone in their military chain of command. We have to rebuild a culture of trust, and ensure that victims who come forward have a safe, fair, and transparent process to obtain justice."
