Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Comments on the Passing of the Honorable Nelson Mandela
December 6, 2013
Honolulu, HI — Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) released the following statement on the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela at the age of ninety-five in his native country of South Africa.
“Yesterday, the world lost one of its most influential and valuable leaders, the Honorable Nelson Mandela, who rose from imprisonment to presidency, bringing together a divided nation, and inspiring a global community. He overcame discrimination and persecution to spread a message of peace and unity from which every one of us can learn and strive to put in practice in our own lives,” said Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
The congresswoman added, “Nelson Mandela was a true servant-leader who humbly led by example and taught others that by working together peacefully, they can best achieve their goals for progress and positive growth. The best way to honor him today and always, is by practicing the ideals of acceptance, humility, and reconciliation that he sacrificed so much to uphold.”
A memorial service for Nelson Mandela will be held in Johannesburg on December 10th. His body will lie in Pretoria for 4 days before it is buried on December 15th at his home in Qunu.
