Rep. Tulsi Gabbard on Facebook: 'I'iwi Protected Under Endangered Species Act

September 26, 2017
Press Release

In Hawai‘i, protecting our environment – especially our native plants and animals – is part of our way of life, embedded in the fabric of our culture and society. The ‘i‘iwi was once one of the most common forest birds in Hawai‘i, but due to habitat loss, invasive species, and avian diseases, its population continues to face steep decline and is now largely restricted to East Maui and the windward side of Hawai‘i Island. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to protect the ‘i‘iwi as threatened species under the Endangered Species Act is welcomed progress towards protecting and preserving this unique and special treasure to our islands
