Rep. Tulsi Gabbard on Facebook: Local Agriculture

September 18, 2017
Press Release

"Expanding access to fresh, nutritious food is crucial to improve health outcomes across #Hawaii and the nation. However, the 44 million Americans, including 19 million children, who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) programs often find fresh fruits and vegetables too costly or inaccessible. Two local organizations in our community are working to fix this problem. We congratulate the The Food Basket, Inc. - Hawai'i Island's Food Bank in Kailua-Kona and the Heritage Ranch in Honaunau who have each received $500,000 to expand access to fresh produce for those receiving SNAP assistance. These two projects are a part of 32 new grants provided by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture to stock food pantries and farmers markets and increase access to healthy foods that all families need and deserve. Mahalo to the Food Basket and Heritage Ranch for working to bring nutritious food options to our community!"
