Rep. Tulsi Gabbard on Facebook: Hawaii Department of Education Receives National Innovation Award

Hawaii has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Frank Newman Award for State Innovation, a national award that recognizes state innovation in education that sets an example for other states and has a significant impact on student achievement. Hawaii’s selection this year recognizes the success of programs like Strive Hawaii that has increased college and career readiness by 42%, increased the number of students enrolling in Early College credit-earning programs by 74%, and decreased the number of graduates needing remediation by nearly one-third. The award also recognizes Hawaii’s improvement in teacher retention through mentoring initiatives that have helped increase five-year teacher retention from 44% to 52%. Education is the key to unlocking a better and brighter future for our next generation, and this award recognizes important and sorely needed progress for our state.
